The Madison Art Society is holding its 37Th Annual Member Art Exhibition at the E. C. Scranton Memorial Library at 801 Boston Post Road, Madison Ct. There is a fine display of the art society's water colors, oil paintings, pastels, drawings, and sculpture (112 works of art). The art can be viewed during normal library hours in the community room during the month of February. There is no charge for the show. Portrait artist, Diane Aeschilman, received the most popular art award offered by the Madison Fish Tale for her portrait of "Kimberly" . The art on display may be purchased and the artists donate a percent of the sale to the library.

On Sunday, February 12, 2012, Lou Bonamarte, well known New England water colorist, will be conducting an art critique of some of the 112 works of art in the show at 1:30 pm. On Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 6:30 p.m., Fred Biamonte, educator and psycho biographer of artists from the New Britain Museum of American Art will conduct an art slide lecture on the life and art of Winslow Homer. A nominal donation will be appreciated for the slide lecture. Both events will be held at the community room of the library and the art show will be open to viewers. Questions can be directed to B. Madison Art Society to Hold 37th Annual Member Show

The Madison Art Society will hold its 37th Annual Member Exhibition and Sale at the EC Scranton Memorial Library January 30, 2011through February 24, 2012. The library is open to the public and it is located at 801 Boston Post Road, Madison Ct 203- 245-7365. The exhibit will feature works of oil, pastel, water color mediums and sculpture. Over 100 pieces of art work will be on exhibit and available for purchase. As always, the artists donate a portion of the sale proceedings to the library.

The show will be open during regular library hours.

This year, the exhibit will recognize Clinton artist, Penny Chittenden, whose painting of a her granddaughter, Katie, was chosen as the "most popular" at last year's show. Her new painting in oil, Indian River will be displayed this year.

A reception will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 from 6:15 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. and it is open to members and guests in the library's community room. On Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 1:30 p.m., Lou Bonamarte, well known watercolorist and oil paintier, will conduct a critique of the art work. The Madison Art Society has more than 200 members. It conducts lectures, painting demonstrations and member painting sessions on a year-round basis. Wishing all of you a very Happy New Year 2012! If you are creating goals for the next year, plan on taking creative time for yourself and renewing your Madison Art Society dues if you have not done it already. Who said that Feburary is a boring month has not seen our schedule. You may want to look at it closely when you are planning your Florida vacations. Receiving for our 37th Annual Member Show is Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Remember the art needs to be appropriate to be seen by the young children and families that use the Scranton Memorial Library Community Room.. The size limit is a 36 inches (max) in any direction (framed) and you must be a current 2012 member with dues paid in full (you can pay that day at Receiving). Pat Barone, Paula Emery and Stuart Lerner are our co-chairpersons for the event. The reception is Tuesday January 31 from 6:15 - 8 :15 p.m. and our Critique will be conducted well known water-colorist and oil painting artist, Lou Bonamarte, which is scheduled on Sunday, February 12, at 1:30 p.m at the Scranton Memorial Library. On Wednesday, February 22, 2012, New Britain Museum of Fine Art educator, Frank Biamonte, will be giving a slide lecture on the Art of Winslow Homer starting at 6:30 pm. We are honored to announce a special watercolor demonstration by internationally known artist and author, Charles Reid, which is scheduled for Sunday, February 26, 2012 at 2:15 at the Old Memorial Hall located on Route One in Madison. we will be requesting a minimum donation of $5 for this demonstration to offset costs. We have just purchased an overhead mirror to improve our demonstrations so they can be seen from the back.

Patricia Seakamp is the coordinator for the Madison Town Hall. Sara Nebel and Nancy Armstrong will be exhibiting their art work in January and February.

Please let me know if you will be exhibiting your art in a special gallery or show so we can share it with our members . We like to support each other throughout the year. A special thanks to Jan Blencowe for keeping our website current and Jay Babina who coordinates our newspaper, the MAS Hilights.

We have one of the two co-chairs needed for our Juried Show, Marge Casey and we need another one ASAP. Please contact me at bschirmeier@yahoo.com if you are willing to volunteer. It is important that I hear from someone ASAP. I will be more than happy to assist you and provide the procedures that have been written for each sub chair and the team activities. The co-chairs will be seeking members needed to put on a show of this magnitude. Receiving for the Juried Show is Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. until noon with a Reception on Sunday, May 6, 2012 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm Plein air oil painter, David Lussier, will be our juror and he will also be doing a demonstration for us on Sunday June, 3, 2012 at 2:15 pm at the Old Memorial Town Hall in Madison. We will have a pastel lecture demonstration planned on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. at the Scranton Memorial Library by well known pastelist, Clayton Buchanon.

Winter Studio is completely filled and it will start on Monday, January 9, 2012. Beth Wardwell has additional demonstrations scheduled for the summer, plein air painting will start again in the summer, and outdoor art events will be offered to our artists. I hope you re-join for 2012 and that I will see all of you at these events.

Entry requirements:

Original works in all media (no photography or computer-generated art). No works done under

the guidance of an instructor are eligible. Work must be signed, priced, and framed with screw eyes and wire attached.

“Gallery wrap” canvas without frame will be accepted (if sides are painted as part of the painting). “Not for Sale” works

will be accepted. Sculpture must be steady and accompanied by a safe, free-standing pedestal. Two-dimensional entries

cannot exceed 36 inches in length or width, including the frame. Work cannot have been shown in any previous Scranton

Library show. Fee $10.

The Madison Art Society reserves the right to remove or decline any submitted work for any reason at any time including

inappropriate material. MAS decisions are final. Artwork should be appropriate and sensitive to a venue used by young

children and families. Submission of work and payment of entry fee does not in any way constitute a guarantee of

acceptance of any work submitted.

Letter from the President

As the days are getting shorter and the foliage is quickly disappearing, there are still a few of us brave souls out there plein air painting. Jay Babina has done a wonderful job for us this year. Our last event for the year is the Annual Small Art Works for the Holidays by our Elected Artists starting on November 1, 2011 and it will be on view until the end of the year at Peoples Bank in Madison.

The MAS Board of Directors explored new opportunities for our artists to display their work this fall and spent a long time developing a long range plan to move us forward in the future. Beth Wardwell, our art demonstration coordinator, has done an excellent job with our demonstrations. Our last art demonstration by Kathy Anderson in September was standing room only.

The BOD had been looking into creating display opportunities for our artists besides our Member and Juried Art shows. We believe in collaborating with other non-profit organizations and it benefits both the artist financially and increase exposure of our artist's work and it helps to raise money for them. Unfortunately, we did not get as many artists wanting to participate in these events as anticipated, however it was good exposure for MAS artists and helped out the community groups. The Bauer Farm Fall Festival was a lot of fun as usual and we plan to do it again next year.

Our Annual Meeting was held in September and it was a nice way to enjoy the company of our fellow artists. Our current board members have volunteered to stay on the board again for 2012. The MAS Board of Directors has continued to be very supportive and active in planning our society’s activities over the past year. MAS is very lucky to have such an experienced dedicated board and I am honored to have all of them willing to stay on for 2012. We recognize the years of service that they have all contributed to make MAS a great art society.

Our current board is Jay Babina, Pat Barone, Denise Casey, Nancy Chapman, Penny Chittenden, John Coplein, Ellen Fabian, Stuart Lerner, Linda Loen, Joan McPherson, Seymour Page, Maryanne Rupp, Beverly Schirmeier, Maude Schmidt, Patricia Seekamp, Paula Solimene Emery, John Tubb, and Beth Wardwell.

We need co-chairs for our Juried Show that is scheduled to be held in May 2012. If you would like to step up and co-chair this show, please contact me bschirmeier@yahoo.com. All of these events don’t happen by themselves and we need support.

Beth Wardwell has agreed to stay on as our coordinator so if you have any ideas for demonstrations, contact her at bethrw@comcast.net or at 203 - 488 - 4688 with the name of an artist and a contact number. The small donations at the demonstrations have allowed us to offer additional events.

Elected Artists’ Small Works Holiday Show

People’s Bank in Madison invited us to exhibit our Elected Artists’ Small Works Holiday Show again this November and December. Over half of MAS members are elected artists. The show will run from November 2 thru New Year's Day. Pick-up day is Monday, January 2, 2012. A special thanks to Sara Nebel for coordinating it for us.

Madison Garden Club Art and Flower Tour

On October 8, 2011, the Garden Club of Madison held its first-of-its-kind event that featured a tour of private homes where the floral designers inspired by a painting, sculpture or photo created a floral arrangement display at several area homes. It was a lovely day and many visitors came through the homes and to see the floral arrangements and 10 paintings created by eight of our artists.

Women Club - Food Pantry Wine Tasting Fund Raiser - Winter Club –

On September 23, 2011, the Madison Women Club held a Wine Tasting and Appetizer Fund Raiser for the Madison Food Pantry. All money that was earned (100%) went to the Madison Food Pantry. It was held at the Madison Winter Club. They asked the Madison Art Society artists to display their art work in the front dining area for guests to view before going into the wine tasting. Seven artists participated and we sold one painting.

Dues

Membership Data – Keep it Current

Maude Schmidt does a wonderful job coordinating our membership information. Please let her know if you have changed your address or E-mail data. Many of our news items, due to time constraints and postage and printing costs, are done through the E-mail. We do not provide members personal email information to other members. Please let us know your E-mail address so we can keep you informed. Pat Barone will be coordinating Volunteer Positions. When you send in your dues, please note also how you would like to help out during the year (i.e., chair a show, chair a portion of the show – help with Receiving, Jury Process, Hanging, Reception, Critique, Outdoor Show, Soliciting for Award money, Demonstrations – chairs and set up, etc.).

Madison Town Hall Art Exhibits

MAS Long Term Plan

The board spent several meetings discussing our long range plans and the future direction for MAS. We shared some of the key points from the Long Rang Plan and received approval on modifications to our bylaws at the annual meeting. It is essential for a society to look at itself closely and discuss its future direction. We take our members concerns and needs seriously. We have taken steps to enhance our art society and to find new venues to display your art work. However these new ventures require support from you.

Membership

One of the strengths of MAS is the collegial atmosphere of a small group where beginning artists through professionals can co-exist and support each other. Therefore we want to keep membership around 250 members.
We are a fine art society and have decided not to extend our membership to include crafts or photography.
The membership fee will remain at $25 for 2012. Our financial year is January to December.
Current members must be pay their membership fee by March 30^th or lose their Elected Artist standing. Written notice will be sent out prior to action (included in our current bylaws).
We voted on modifying our bylaws to include an age requirement that members must be 21 or older. This age requirement will also be used for entry to the juried show.
We already have in our bylaws that we offer membership to Friends – or non-artists that want to be involved and support the fine arts along the shoreline communities.
We decided to keep membership open to all geographic areas since we have members that spend part of the year out of state and return in the summer.
MAS blog site will remain. We will look into creating a website.

Programs

We will continue to offer demonstrations with nominal donations. Remain 6 - 7 per year.
Plein air is a great success and members want us to continue with it.
Winter Studio will be offered again. An announcement was sent out after firming up our space agreement with St. Andrews Church in Madison –limit 20 artists.
We will continue hold the art shows in the Scranton Library and look at other venues that offer good wall space, lighting, and traffic.

Juried Show Change

We heard from many of our members that we should limit the juried show entry to one entry per artist to allow more artists to have the opportunity to show their art work. We will try this approach next year and review the success of the show using that approach. The Jury Show is in May.

Members Show

We will offer a Member show in February. Size of work will be 36 inches in any directions – max.

Expanding Offerings

Expanding our offerings to include workshops or bus tours to museums would require a volunteer to chair these events. Decision - This offering will stay on hold until we can find a person willing to chair them and the board would re-visit it at that time.
Expanding art exhibits – Town hall exhibits will remain – Patricia Seekamp is chairing this opportunity.
We reduced the number of outdoor exhibits this year. Based on your requests, we tried to offer several new co-sponsored art opportunities this fall. Unfortunately, there was little interest shown by our members. We will look seriously whether we will do more of them in the future.

Volunteers

New position added – Volunteer Coordinator – Patricia Barone. We will be coordinating the volunteer opportunities and matching them with our members. Patricia Barone will work in conjunction with our Membership Chairperson, Maude Schmidt.

We have many members that we can always count on to do the work and they have excellent knowledge and skills as well as experience. MAS wants to insure that we have co-trained others that have joined MAS and that we will have an expanding knowledge base to do the work into the future.

Any organization is only as good as their volunteer support. Being an active member includes helping out to make our organization vital. We never have problems getting support, but we also need leaders.

MAS Calendar of Events

Winter Studio

The ten week Winter Studio will begin in January at the St. Andrews Church, Madison, CT. Denise Casey is coordinating it for us this year. We have met our limit of 20 artists (notice went out in an E-mail), but if you want to be added as a substitute, please let her know at dencasey@comcast.net.

MAS Member Show February 2012

The Member Show will be held at the Scranton Memorial Library in Madison in February. Pat Barone, Paula Solimene Emery and Stuart Lerner will be co-chairing the event and will be looking for volunteers to assist in making it a success. Receiving is Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Take down is Friday February 24 from 3 - 5:30p.m. and on Saturday, February 25 from 9 a.m. until noon. We are still discussing the reception date. There will also be a Critique and demonstration/lecture scheduled for February.

Jury Show May 2012

As mentioned, we need a chairperson or co-chairs for the Jury Show in May. We start planning for these shows this fall. Procedures including a timeline of activities are written for these roles and there is support by the BOD officers.

The Receiving Date is Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 9:30 until Noon. Jurying is from 1 – 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2012, and Hanging is on Sunday, April 29 from 1 – 3 p.m. Non – Selected Pick up is Monday April 30 until Thursday May 4, 2012. Reception is under discussion. Demonstration is Sunday, May 13, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Take Down is Friday, June 1 from 3 - 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday, June 2, 2012 from 9 a.m. – noon.

Artists in the News

Patricia Corbett and Lorene Scholl were the artists for the Months of September and October at the Madison Town Hall. Denise Casey and Stewart Byron will be the artists for the months of November and December. Joan Mc Pherson will be displaying her watercolors with two other artists at the Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library in Stony Creek, November 6 -30^th with an opening reception on November 6, 2011 from 4 – 6 p.m.

Beverly Schirmeier will display her oil paintings and pastels at the Acton Library in Old Saybrook until November 26, 2011 and will then show her work for the month of December at the Henry Carter Hull Library in Clinton.

Margaret Dean is currently displaying her work at the Martha Link Walsh gallery in Branford and she was awarded Signature Status in the American Impressionist Society.

John Tubb, Susan Burnham, Linda Loen and Maryanne Rupp will be at the Malone’s Coffee House, Clinton, through November.

Sister Joan Bernard and Cindy Stevens will be showing their art work during November and December at Simply Pearls at Waters Edge Resorts, Westbrook, CT.

Karen Wiesner will be having a solo art show at the Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedeh Synagogue at 55 East Kings Highway, Chester CT. The Opening is November 18 at 8:30 p.m. and the show will be up until January 16, 2012.

Maryanne Rupp is displaying her painting in a juried show at the New Britain Museum of American Art this month.

Lisabeth Billingsley had two collages juried into the Pen and Brush People’s Choice Exhibit in NYC.

Eileen Eder is part of the Group Still Life Exhibit at the Flinn Gallery in Greenwich, Ct from October through December 7, 2011.

Christine Ivers, Claudia Post and Laurel Friedman are part of the Connecticut Pastel Society Signature Artist Show at the Hartford Frame Company in East Hartford during November.

Pat and Bill Seekamp are the Artists for the Month of November at the Guilford Library.

Congratulations to Roseanne Berlutti on becoming an Elected Artist at the Lyme Art Association. Many of our artists have work in the LAA Landscape Show.

Congratulations to Christine Ivers, Claudia Post, Diane Stone, Laurel Friedman, Diana Rogers, Karen Wiesner and Maryanne Rupp for their acceptance in the National Ct Pastel Society Renaissance Juried Show until November 13, 2012. Karen Wiesner won second place in the show.

Joan Cole is the artist of the month at the Liberty Bank in Clinton in November and Jay Babina will there for December and January.

Brabara Rossitto won the Essex Art Association award this past fall for her paintings, Scruffy an oil portrait.

Upcoming Board of Directors Exhibit

Madison Art Society President, Beverly A. Schirmeier, and Vice President, Don Trownsell, along with seventeen additional board members will be displaying their paintings at the Henry Carter Hull Library, Clinton, for the month of October.

During the month of October,seventeen Madison Art Society board of director members will be displaying their paintings at the Henry Carter Hull Library located at 10 Killingworth Turnpike, Rte. 81, Clinton, Ct.. Artists paintings will feature seascapes, landscape and still lifes. The art work will be hung throughout the library on the first and second floors. The library hours are Monday 10 -8 p.m., Tuesday 10-5p.m., Wednesday 10 -8 p.m., Thursday, 12-8p.m., Friday, 9 -5 p.m., and Saturday 10 -2 p.m. The art show will feature oil, acrylic and pastel paintings and many of the paintings may be purchased.

Viewers can see the art work of the Madison Art Society board members that were just re-elected for 2012 at the Madison Art Society Annual Meeting this past week. Beverly Schirmeier, was re-elected President, along with Don Trownsell, Vice President, Joan McPherson, Treasurer and Nancy Chapman and Maryanne Rupp as Co-Secretary. Other board members returning for 2012 are: Jay Babina, Patricia Barone, Denise Casey, Penny Chittenden, John Copelin, Stuart Lerner, Linda Loen, Seymour Page, Maude Schmidt, Patricia Seekamp, Paula Solimene Emery, John Tubb, and Beth Wardwell. Stuart's sculpture can be seen at his gallery located in Madison. Each board member will have their art work on display and they are looking forward to another year of working together to bring art shows, plein air painting and artist demonstrations to the shoreline community. Letter from the President

The MAS Board of Directors has been very busy this year exploring new opportunities for our artists to display their art work and developing a long range plan to move us forward in the future. Beth Wardwell, our art demonstration coordinator, has continued to provide our members with excellent demonstrations. This summer, both Chris Ivers, night time pastel demonstration, and Steve Cryan, watercolor demonstration, were well received by our members. We are eagerly looking forward to Kathy Anderson's oil demo coming up on Thursday, September 15th.

At our summer outdoor art exhibits, we sold 18 paintings at the Annual MAS Outdoor Art Exhibition benefiting the Scranton Library. We offer our thanks to John Copelin and Seymour Page for coordinating it for us again this year. The Madison Exchange Club Antique and Art show was also a success where we sold 17 paintings and a few prints. The weather could not been lovelier for to enjoy each other’s company in the shade of the trees on the Madison Green. They have invited us to come again next year.

It is a great way to enjoy the company of your fellow artists and share great food and drinks. Luckily for our MAS artists, our current board members have volunteered to stay on the board again for 2012. We can all be grateful for their hard work and continued support.

Demos are open to the public at the Memorial Town Hall near the Madison Green located on the top floor on Thursdays at 6:30 pm. A nominal donation would be appreciated to offset costs.

September 15 (new date!)—Oil painting by Kathy Anderson

In 2001, Kathy was invited to join a group of painters under the tutelage of renowned artist Richard Schmid. This opportunity renewed and revitalized her work and began a period of intense focus and rapid growth. Painting for these last 10 years with Schmid, his wife Nancy Guzik, and the group, which has become known as the Putney Painters, has provided invaluable support and inspiration.

Elected Artists’ Small Works Holiday Show

People’s Bank in Madison has again invited us to exhibit our Elected Artists’ Small Works Holiday Show (6x8-inch paintings or smaller in any size frame) again this November and December. Madison Garden Club Art and Flower Tour

October 8 Deadline for submissions is September 2nd

The Garden Club of Madison is soliciting landscape, portrait, still life and abstract painting and sculpture and other art forms for their Arts and Flowers fundraising tour, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. This first-of-its-kind event features a tour of private homes. Tickets for the tour will be $5 (artists involved are not charged). For the tour, floral designers will be inspired by a painting, sculpture or photo to create a floral arrangement and display the inspirational artwork with the flowers at several area homes. Deadline for artists' submissions is Sept. 2. Artists will have the opportunity to showcase their works of art as they are paired with a floral design interpretation of the artwork.

To have your work considered, please send a jpeg (8.5 x11 or smaller) photograph of your painting, photo or sculpture (limit 3) along with dimensions, medium, price and artists name, address, phone and email. September 22, 2011 - Madison Exchange Club Movie, Wine and Food Vendors with Refreshments Fund Raiser

The Madison Exchange Club is planning an outdoor fair and movie fund raiser on Route One, Madison CT just outside the movie cinema. It is going to be held on Thursday, September 22, 2011 and they expect to have hundreds of patrons (we are negotiating the artist's fees - currently it is an entry fee is $40 plus 10% of sales). The rain date will be the 2nd or 3rd Thursday in October. There will be lots of space, a tent can be used with a display set up at 5 p.m. and break down by 8 - 9 p.m. Since the movie starts at 8:15 guests may linger longer outdoors. Women Club - Food Pantry Wine Tasting Fund Raiser - Winter Club - Friday September 23, 2011 Deadline for submission is September 5^th.

The Madison Women Club is holding a Wine Tasting and Appetizer Fund Raiser for the Madison Food Pantry. All money that is earned (100%) will go to the Madison Food Pantry. It is going to be held at the Madison Winter Club on Friday evening, September 23, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. They will be having a silent auction along with the wine tasting in the main dining room.

They asked the Madison Art Society artists (they need about approximately 25 to 30 artists) to display their art work in the front dining area for guests to view before going into the wine tasting or during the event. One painting per artist will be selected and the framed painting must be less than 24 inches framed in any direction. To make it fair for all of our artists, they will conduct a lottery system from all the artist’s names that request to show their work.

By September 5^th, send your jpeg photo along with your name, medium, price and size of work along with your phone number to Peggy Keenan, Women Club, who is our contact diamondsr4ever@snet.net. Use Subject line - Food Pantry MAS Artist.

If you are selected, you will be contacted and you will need to bring your painting to the Winter Club on Friday, September 23, 2011 by at 4p.m. and pick it up by 8 p.m. of that evening. Dick Christofferson is a newly elected to the Board of Governors for the National Art Club.

Congratulations to Tony D’Amico for winning the President’s Award for his drawing, Broadway Winter, at the New York City Salmagundi Club Juried Art Show in August.

At the 2011 Annual Clinton Art Society Juried Show, Nancy Spanich won first prize for her Underwater Temptation. Gloria Nilsson won second prize and Sandy Kensler won the third prize. Several MAS artists also won awards.

Beverly Schirmeier will display her oil paintings and pastels at the Acton Library in Old Saybrook October 17 until November 26, 2011.

Pat Anderson’s watercolor won the watercolor award at the Stony Creek summer art show.

The Madison Art Society Board of Directors will be displaying their artwork at the Hull Library in Clinton during the month of October.

Mike Eagle's watercolor was accepted in September's Mystic International Show at the Mystic Maritime Gallery Seaport 1. He also won NFWS 50/50 Merit Award at the Niagara Frontier Water Color Society Spring Show in Buffalo, NY.

Linda Loen and Maryanne Rupp will be at the Malone’s Coffee House, Clinton, in the fall.

Gayle Asher will be part of the Local Color art show at the Greene Gallery in Guilford August 4th - September 4th.

Madison Art Society Members

Steve Cryan did a great job on his watercolor demonstration last week. He demonstrated an amazing technique creating rocks with a single edge razor blade and use of a ruling pen for watercolors.

We are looking forward to Kathy Anderson's oil demo coming up on Thursday, September 15th.

Twenty artists have signed up so for the August 13th Outdoor Art Exhibition for the Madison Exchange Club on the Madison Green. If you still want to attend, please email me at bschirmeier@yahoo.com. I have to send them an updated list of interested artists ASAP.

We sold 18 paintings at the Annual MAS Outdoor Art Exhibition benefiting the Scranton Library. Lots of thanks to John Copelin and Seymour Page for coordinating it for us. I hope many of you will stop by and say hello this weekend too if there is not any rain.

As I mentioned before, the BOD has been looking into creating display opportunities for our artists. We believe in collaborating with other non-profit organizations and it benefits both the artist financially and increasing exposure of our artist's work and it helps to raise money for them. It is a win for all in involved. I have listed the opportunities below.

Please sign up for our Annual Meeting scheduled for Monday, September 26th at the Madison Country Club. It is always fun and the business portion is only about 10 - 15 minutes. It is a great way to enjoy the company of your fellow artists and share great food and drinks.

Outdoor Art Exhibitions

August 13, 9 am–4 pm—currently paid up MAS members are invited to participate in the Madison Exchange Club's Annual Arts and Antiques Fair on the Madison Green (no rain date). There is no entry fee, but our artists support the Exchange Club by donating 10% of their sales. You can set up and use your own tent or just bring racks. We encourage everyone to come out and support our local artists, antique vendors, and the Madison Exchange Club community efforts. Artists must sign up in advance, so contact Beverly Schirmeier at bschirmeier@yahoo.com if you are interested in participating. A list of participating artists needs to be provided to the Exchange Club a week prior to the event, so sign up early.

The Antique Fair has early bird exhibit, so we can pull up at the end of the Madison Green near the Memorial Town Hall around 7:30 a.m and drop off our art display material to set up. Parking is available near the school and church. Set up is outside the antique area snow fence and there are lots of trees for shade. Let me know when you have arrived so I can give the Exchange Club a list. They will stamp you so you can get into the antique fair. Food can be purchased and Porto potties are available.

Summer Is Time for Antiques and Arts

Summer is a time for our Madison Art Society artists to display their paintings at outdoor art exhibitions and to support our local non-profit organizations such as the Madison Exchange Club at their Annual Arts and Antiques Fair on Saturday, August 13, 2011 on the Madison Green from 9 -4 p.m. (no rain date).

In addition to supporting the Madison Exchange Club by donating 10% of their sales, our artists have donated a percentage of their art sales to the Scranton Memorial Library, the Friends of Hammonasset and the Deacon John Graves Historical House in past years.

Twenty of the Madison Art Society artists will have their art work on sale and they encourage everyone to come out and support our local artists, antique vendors and the Madison Exchange Club community efforts. The Madison Art Society has over 230 artists from throughout the shoreline. The Madison Art Society welcomes the community to attend our free outdoor art exhibitions, their member and juried shows, and to see the artist demonstrations that are open to the public. MAS also provides a high school scholarship award as part of the SAA Award Program.

Come Out and Love Your Local - Artists

The Madison Art Society is holding their Annual Scranton Memorial Library- Festival of the Arts, Outdoor Art Exhibition, again this year on Friday, July 29, 2011 and on Saturday, July 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. The art show will be located under two large tents located on Wall Street in Madison just behind the library and diagonally across from the Madison Post Office. It is a great opportunity for the public to view the paintings by 20 of our local artists and to support the Scranton Memorial Library with the sales from their paintings. The MAS artists donate 10% of the proceeds from the sale of their paintings to the library. In the past seven years, MAS artists have donated over $11,000 to the library as gratitude for using the library to hold their Annual Member and Juried Shows.

The Madison Art Society presents the artwork of Marlborough pastel artist, Diane Stone and a Madison oil painter, Betsey Piner. Their art work will be on display throughout the months of July and August at the Madison Town Hall at 8 Campus Road in Madison, Connecticut. Their collection of oil and pastel paintings are open to the public free of charge and can be viewed during normal business hours.

Over the years, Diane Stone has taken art classes at the Glastonbury Art League and Lyme Art Association. She has also taken oil and pastel art classes and/or workshops with David and Pam Lussier, Jennifer Holmes, and Beth Ellis. In 2009, she studied pastels with Liz Haywood Sullivan and with Frank Frederico in 2010.

Diane's art has been exhibited at Act II Gallery of New Hartford, Lily's of Marlborough, Guilded Edge in Salem, Hidden Gallery, Lyme, Wooden it Be Nice in Marlborough, Glastonbury Art Guild shows, Friends of East Granby Library, Lyme Art Association Gallery, West Hartford Art League, Essex Art Association, and the Regional Art Show at the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly. Her artwork has been accepted into juried shows at the Clinton Art Society, Madison Art Society, Paint and Clay Club and the national pastel show”Cape Cod Pastels Only”as well as numerous other shows. Besides being a member of the Madison Art Society, Diane belongs to the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society, and has been accepted into their annual juried show at Hartford Framing and the Silo Gallery in New Milford. In addition, she is a member of the Connecticut Pastel Society and she has exhibited in their annual show.

Her pastel paintings have won awards in the past (“Butterscotch,” “Market Day,” “Swimmer’s Delight,” “Peppers, and “Red Vase”). Her watercolor and ink “Garden Picked" won an award at Gallery 53 in Meriden. She received The Judge’s Choice Award in the Tolland County Art Associations open show for her pastel “Spirits.” Most recently, she won the Essex Art Association's Best in Show Award ,"The Artist we want to see more of Solo Show in the Exit Gallery” for her oil painting. Diane's Solo Show is scheduled for August-Sept 2011 in the Exit Gallery.

Betsey Piner

Betsey Piner, a Madison artist, has always loved art. She was given a tackle box with tubes of oil paints

and brushes at the age of 8. Her first oil painting lessons were from a family friend when she was in grammar school in Indianapolis. After school, she would take the bus to her friend's home and they would paint. Betsey formally studied at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis and later, in Youngstown Ohio at the Butler Institute of American Art. She attended Ohio University as a Fine Arts major. Betsey's career has encompassed scientific illustration at the Smithsonian Institution, technical illustration and graphic design & production. Betsey worked as a scientific illustrator with the department of Entomology at the Smithsonian Institution and after moving to Connecticut, she worked as a free-lance illustrator for several Yale University faculty members and graduate students.

Marriage and children took the middle of her life. Upon reaching a quieter time of life, she has renewed her passion for painting. She has been a member of the Madison Art Society for many years including several years as a Board member. My paintings are hung in many private collections. Madison has been her home for more than 30 years. She is now enjoying semi retirement, and spending time painting and with her wonderful husband, Harry.

The Madison Art Society Sponsors Award Winning Master Pastelist - Christine Ivers Demonstration of Painting the Night Scene

The Madison Art Society is sponsoring a pastel demonstration by award winning master pastelist, Christine Ivers on Thursday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Memorial Town Hall located on Route One near the Madison Green. Christine has won numerous art awards on her depictions of night scenes and she loves to paint the reflections that occur in the night. She said, " Finding what lies between the shadows of darkness and reflective lights is what drives my excitement to paint the night. Explorations of the colors that are imperceptible to the naked eye are endless. When that barely visible layer collides with light, the creativity begins! Pigments, transitions and reflections all play their part. My goal is to have my viewers fall into that world to discover what they normally wouldn’t take time to see.”

The public is invited to attend. A nominal donation would be appreciated to offset costs.

Chris has a BFA in painting and two-dimensional design from Hartford Art School. She found work in the advertising field for the last 40 years, after which she returned to her passion of painting. She works in both pastels and oils. Chris is the past president of the CT Pastel Society, of which she is also a signature member. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, an elected artist at Lyme Art Association, Audubon Artists, Allied Artists of America, and Academic Artists of America. Other affiliations are with CT Women Artists, Salmagundi Club NYC, and numerous other New England art organizations.

Chris received her Master Circle Medal at the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2009. She was chosen to have her paintings included in Kennedy Publishing's "Best in American Artists" Pastel Edition, and she is one of this year’s Paint America’s National Top 100 Artists. She was chosen as one of the Top 100 Pastelists by Pastel Journal magazine, where she received an honorable mention in the landscape division. She has been published in Practiqué des Arts, Studios Magazine and American Art Collector.

News from the President

If you did not have a chance to see our annual juried show, it’s unfortunate since it was a strong show, and we received many compliments on it. Congratulations on the painting sales by Paul Marra, Dick McKillip, and Dixie Nace. Joan McPherson, MAS’s treasurer, won first place in the show with her watercolor, Tuscan Rooftops. I would like to thank our co-chairs Linda Loen and Nancy Schwartz for their hard work as well as all the volunteers who made a show of this magnitude a success. Patricia Seekamp and her team coordinated a reception with the Guilford Poets Guild where they read poems that were inspired by our artwork. We could not do the show and the poetry reception without your support.

Jerry Caron's oil painting demonstration of a scene in Ireland was well received by our members. Beth Wardwell, our demonstration coordinator, has many other art demonstrations planned for this year. They are listed in our newsletter and are open to the public.

Shannon Chapman, a high school student from Old Lyme, won this year’s Shoreline Arts Alliance Visual Arts scholarship, which we annually sponsor with the Guilford Art League. Her painting was on display during the juried show. We funded the scholarship by auctioning off two of Frank Federico’s pastels that he donated to us.

I would like to welcome our new members and our new elected artists. We are an active art organization and invite our new members to volunteer to support our programs. It’s a great way to meet your fellow members.

I hope to see all of you this summer at our demonstrations, outdoor shows, and plein air experiences, all of which we plan specifically for MAS members. The board of directors continually looks for opportunities for members to display their artwork, and we are exploring several for you to take advantage of in the near future. We are once again going to have a show at People’s Bank in November and December of small works by our elected artists and our annual meeting in September.

Between the rain drops, Jay Babina has started our summer session, and we hope the weather will cooperate. We try very hard to find interesting places to paint that can accommodate our large group of paid members. We need to coordinate with owners of private places so please understand that these places are available on the dates and times that we have negotiated so we do not wear out our welcome. Chris has a BFA in painting and two-dimensional design from Harford Art School. She found work in the advertising field for the last 40 years, after which she returned to her passion of painting. She works in both pastels and oils. Chris is the past president of the CT Pastel Society, of which she is also a signature member. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, an elected artist at Lyme Art Association, Audubon Artists, Allied Artists of America, and Academic Artists of America. Other affiliations are with CT Women Artists, Salmagundi Club NYC, and numerous other New England art organizations.

August 4—Watercolor painting by Steve Cryan

Steve graduated from Paier College of Art in the early 1970s. Since that time he has been painting maritime and railroad subjects. His luminous, realistic watercolors have won numerous awards and hung in private and corporate collections throughout the world, including the Quinnipiac Club in New Haven and the Connecticut River Museum. Most recently, one of his paintings has been added to the art collection on board the Queen Mary II. Steve has illustrated many covers for magazines. He is a leading authority on trains, tugs, and maritime history. His photography collection on the subject is one of the largest in the USA.

Elected Artists’ Small Works Holiday Show

People’s Bank in Madison has again invited us to exhibit our Elected Artists’ Small Works Holiday Show (6x8-inch paintings or smaller in any size frame) again this November and December. Over half of MAS members are elected artists. All work must be wired to hang. Notify Sara Drought Nebel if you plan to show your work so she can plan the exhibit space. Outdoor Art Exhibitions

Summer is a time for Madison Art Society artists to display their paintings at outdoor exhibitions and to support our local non-profit organizations.

Friday, July 29 and Saturday, July 30, 10 am–6 pm—The Annual Scranton Memorial Library Festival of Outdoor Arts is a great opportunity for the public to view works by MAS artists and to support the Scranton Library by purchasing paintings. Currently paid-up MAS artists can participate; however, only waiting list room space is available. Participants donate 10% of the proceeds from the sale of their paintings to the library. In the past six years, our artists have donated $11,000 to the library in gratitude for use of the library for our annual member and juried shows.

The sale is held behind the library on Wall Street during Madison’s Sidewalk Sale Days. There will be two 20 x 30-foot tents erected to hold the 12 exhibitors and additional outdoor spaces for 10 x10-foot tents. A fee of $25 will be charged for the tent or outdoor space to cover the costs. Once the space is allocated, the fee is non-refundable.

For site assignment and confirmation by phone, mail your entry fee (with check made out to MAS) with your phone number no later than July 1 to Seymour Page, 14 Pepperidge Lane, Madison, Ct 06443.

Each exhibitor is responsible for setting up in the assigned site prior to 10 am on the day of the exhibition (the earlier, the better), and each artist must ensure that the site is hazard free and secure (MAS assumes no liability). The exhibit committee will direct you to your site. Each exhibitor is expected to take down his or her exhibit and clean the site by 7 pm on the day of the show. Since the exhibition is being held in coordination with the Chamber of Commerce’s Sidewalk Sales Days, exhibitors may want to offer sales racks. Artists should send their 10% commission on sales to MAS, P.O. Box 1483, Madison, Ct 06443 by August 12. Seymour Page is coordinating the exhibition for us again with John Copelin.

August 13, 9 am–4 pm—Currently paid up MAS members are invited to participate in the Madison Exchange Club's Annual Arts and Antiques Fair on the Madison Green (no rain date). There is no entry fee, but our artists support the Exchange Club by donating 10% of their sales. You can set up and use your own tent or just bring racks. We encourage everyone to come out and support our local artists, antique vendors, and the Madison Exchange Club community efforts. Artists must sign up in advance, so contact Beverly Schirmeier at bschirmeier@yahoo.com if you are interested in participating. A list of participating artists needs to be provided to the Exchange Club a week prior to the event, so sign up early.

October 15—MAS artists will be painting and exhibiting their scenes of the farm during the Bauer Farm Harvest Festival. Plein air painters only and only paintings of Bauer Farm.

Madison Garden Club Art and Flower Tour

October (date to be determined soon)—The Madison Garden Club will sponsor an Art and Flower Tour and would like to solicit artists to send them a jpeg photograph of your artwork (limit 3) , along with the size, medium, price, name, address, phone, and email. Please send your jpeg material to the coordinator Karen Seligson, Madison Garden Club of Madison, 2013-245-2441, kmcxx@yahoo.com. Also let her know if you would be willing to donate your home or studio to this event (add street address) or donate a percentage of the sales from the event to the garden club. None of the options are mandatory to be selected. Your painting can be listed for sale without a commission. If you do not have jpeg photos, send your photographs (limit 3) to Carolyn Bernard, 38 Beakman Place, Madison, Ct 06443 or 203-245- 0372 along with the requested information.

For the tour, the floral arrangers will select a painting (they will choose from the photographs) to use as the inspiration for a floral exhibit and then hang the associated painting along with it at several homes. They would like the selected artists to be at the selected homes throughout the afternoon to discuss their painting with patrons.

The Madison Art Society will conduct its 36^th Annual Juried Exhibition and Sale at Madison’s E. C. Scranton Memorial Library May 2–27, 2011 and announces art exhibition award winners.

First Place Winner Tuscan Roof Tops, watercolor by Joan McPherson

During the month of May, the Madison Art Society 36th Annual Juried Art Exhibit, consisting of 94 pieces of art, will be on display at the Madison Scranton Memorial Library at 801 Boston Post Road. It is open to the public free of charge during normal library hours.

The juror was well-known artist and lecturer, Jerry Caron, a former member of the Lyme College of Fine Arts, where he served as faculty adviser to the board of trustees and dean of students. His work has been exhibited in national shows and numerous one-person shows as well as it has graced the cover of Yankee Magazine.

Jerry is represented by several galleries along the East coast and he is a member of the Salmagundi Club, the Copley Society and many other professional art organizations. When asked about his philosophy in jurying a show, Jerry said, " I look for pieces that have eye appeal, and to me that starts with a sense of color and composition. I am not overly concerned about representational, or non-objective work. Beyond that, I look for the technical skills in the various media the artist has chosen".

Twenty paintings were selected for awards (cash, gift certificates, and services) by the juror. The awards were generously donated by local and shoreline businesses and merchants.

Jerry Caron will be conducting an oil painting demonstration for the public on Sunday, May 15 at 1:30 p.m at the Scranton Memorial Library. The public is also welcome to come to a Poetry and Art reception and the Guilford Poets Guild will read their poems that were inspired by the show's artwork on Wednesday, May 18 at 7 p.m.

The juried show's first prize winner is Madison water colorist, Joan Mc Pherson, who won for her watercolor painting called Tuscan Roofs. Saturated color and value contrasts are what Joan McPherson seeks to incorporate into her paintings. Finding shapes and establishing values make creating images exciting to Joan. She enjoys designing a composition that will present ordinary subjects from a novel perspective. Sunlight and shadows feature prominently in many of her works. Her concentration on sunlight and shadows was clearly evident in her Tuscan Roofs painting that won the prize.

Her watercolors have hung in many local, regional, and national exhibitions. Awards include the New England Watercolor Society's first prize, an Award of Excellence from the San Diego Watercolor Society, and numerous other awards over the past 30 years. Her teaching experience includes classes at the Connecticut River Art Workshops, The Guilford Art Center, and for the Town of Madison. Joan is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, the San Diego Watercolor Society, the Connecticut Watercolor Society, the New England Watercolor Society, the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, the Clinton Art Society, and the Madison Art Society, of which she is a past president and current treasurer.

Beverly A. Schirmeier, the society’s president, said, “Our artists donate ten percent of the proceeds of any sold works to the library to demonstrate our appreciation and an additional five percent for the annual Shoreline Alliance of the Arts Youth Visual Arts Scholarship . This year's Shoreline Alliance Visual Artist was Shannon Chapman from Old Lyme High School. We encourage the public to attend the show and to support our local artists and businesses and merchants..

The Madison Art Society has over 240 artists from throughout the shoreline. The Madison Art Society welcomes the community to attend our free outdoor art exhibitions, their member and juried shows, and to see the artist demonstrations that are open to the public. MAS also provides a high school scholarship award as part of the SAA Award Program.

Art demonstrations are open to the public at the Memorial Town Hall near the green on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.: Pastel demonstration by Christine Ivers on July 14, Watercolors by Steve Cryan on august 4, and Oil painting by Kathy Anderson on September 8, 2011. Presidents Letter

As I am writing this newsletter, I look out the window and stare at the piles of snow slowly melting. I realize soon spring will be here and I can get outside to paint with many of you. I hope you are all busy creating works of art to exhibit in out 36^th Annual Juried Show coming up this May.

Out 36^th Annual Member Show a was a great success and our gratitude is extended to our two co-chairs, Diane Stone and Maryanne Rupp, for the splendid job they did in organizing it for us and thank you to our volunteers. We displayed 111 works of our member’s artwork and we sold seven paintings. Congratulations to Maureen Gaglino, Ellen Fabian, Carol Ridgeway, Renni Ridgeway Korsmeyer, Terry Bogan and Chet White. Penny Chittenden’s watercolor, Katie, won the Most Popular Prize and she received a $100 award from the Fish Tale Restaurant. Frank Federicio was our guest artist for the Critique and he was able to give his artistic insight on our paintings and sculpture. The Madison Art Society donated $1,000 to the Scranton Memorial Library in gratitude for their support and for providing us a home gallery to showcase our artwork and to conduct lectures and demonstrations.

Penny Chittenden's watercolor, Katie, won the "most popular" prize at the Member's Show this year.

We have many new artists that have joined the Madison Art Society this year and we would like to welcome all of you all to our art society.

Beth Wardwell, our Art Demonstration Coordinator, has done a superb job developing a diversified demonstration schedule. Fred Biamonte’s slide lecture on the paintings and life of artist, “John Singer Sergeant” that was held on February 16 which was very well received by our members. I hope that you will be attending our planned educational opportunities and you will be inspired by these artists work (schedule included).

Our prospectus for our 36^th Annual Juried Show has been included in this issue of our Hilights. A special thanks to Betsey Piner for her work on it and to John Tubb for the show’s posters. Nancy Schwartz and Linda Loen have been busy planning for the juried show and working with their co-chairs. We would like to thank all of the volunteer artists that will participate to make our show a reality. Jerry Caron will be our juror this year and he will also conduct a watercolor demonstration for us on May 16, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at the Scranton Memorial Library. Once again the Guilford Poet’s Guild will be creating and reading poems inspired by our art on May 18, 2011.

I would like to welcome our new MAS members: Mary Berlin, Catherine Ocalewski Duffield, Carrolyn Kahler, Anna Bergander, Diane DePaola, Diane Gorrick, Nancy Sue Spanich, and Connie Vogell.

We have 237 members to date. One way to meet and get to know our members is to volunteer for the various shows, attend receptions and demonstrations or by participating in the weekly plein air painting sessions this summer. We are a very active art society, but to keep up the programs we need all of your help - perhaps only two hours a year - sitting an art show.

Dues

Our financial year is January through December. We are planning many great events for our members, but 2011 dues were to be sent in by January. Please send them to the following address: MAS, PO Box 1383, Madison, CT 06443. Let us know if you change your personal information and email address.

We will NOT be collecting renewal of your dues at the Jury Show receiving and they must be sent in prior to the show (Elected Artists will lose their status if we do not receive them and there is a lapse in payment).

Our co-chairs for the 36th Annual Juried Show are Linda Loen and Nancy Schwartz. Many of our artists have volunteered already and we thank you for your support in advance. We have already started planning for the show and the Prospectus is attached. If you have started a painting for the show, the size with frame is 36 inches max length and width framed.

Please keep in mind that the Community Room is also used by young children so the subject matter should be appropriate to be viewed by families with little children. Receiving is Saturday, April 30th from 9:30 to noon and Jerry Caron will be our juror. His art work that was done in Ireland is on display at the Greene Gallery, Guilford throughout March.

Christine Drago watercolor - Venice from Ponte Accademia

The Madison Art Society presents the artwork of watercolorist, Christine Drago and oil and pastel artist, Maryanne Rupp. Their art work will be on display throughout the months of March and April at the Madison Town Hall at 8 Campus Road in Madison, Connecticut. Their watercolors, oil and pastel paintings will be on display and the show is open to the public for viewing during normal business hours.

Christine Drago was born in England and moved to Connecticut when she was in her 20’s. She has worked as an artist since 1990. Christine said, “I fell into a watercolor class by default, when the oil painting class I wanted to take was full. However, after the first session I was hooked. The medium is so mercurial, a happy accident one moment, a watermark in the middle of the sky the next. It can be instantly rewarding and almost totally unforgiving. However, if you get it right, watercolor seems to possess a clarity and essence of light that is hard to find in other media". She paints mostly land and seascapes, scenes that grab her attention because of a unique quality of some kind; perhaps an interesting mood, play of light, or natural beauty. Christine's watercolors contain strong tonal contrasts. In this way she hopes to incorporate the power of oil painting with the freshness of watercolor.

Ms. Drago has been accepted into a number of juried shows including the Lyme Art Association, the Guilford Art League, and the Madison Art Society. Maryanne Rupp

Maryanne Rupp is a Killingworth artist who works in both pastels and oils. She holds membership in The Lyme Art Association, Connecticut Pastel Society, and Mystic Art Center; and is an elected member of the Clinton Art Society and Madison Art Society, on which she serves on the Board of Directors.

She has been accepted into juried exhibitions sponsored by the above organizations, and has won awards and prizes over the last several years. She has also been accepted into the National Juried Show, Renaissance in Pastel, held at the Mattatuck Museum in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, she won an Award of Merit at the Connecticut Pastel Society Member Show. She has had exhibits in many local venues as well as a solo Show at Pacific Street Gallery, New London and The Emerald Isle Gallery in Clinton . Most recently she has exhibited at Simply Pearls and at Water’s Edge in Westbrook. She was accepted into the Cooley Gallery Small Works Show in 2009 and has had a palette accepted for the Florence Griswold Museum ’s Christmas Tree.

Madison artist, Elizabeth Boyd, Fruit, acrylic & pastel

The Madison Art Society will hold its 36th Annual Member Exhibition and Sale at the EC Scranton Memorial Library January 30, 2011through February 25, 2011. The library is open to the public and it is located at 801 Boston Post Road, Madison Ct 203- 245-7365. The exhibit will feature works of oil, pastel, water color mediums and sculpture. Over 100 pieces of art work will be on exhibit and available for purchase. As always, the artists donate a portion of the sale proceedings to the the library. The show will be open during regular library hours.

This year, the exhibit will recognize Madison artist, Elizabeth Boyd, whose painting of a ballerina was chosen as the "most popular" at last year's show. Her new painting in acrylic and pastel, the Fruit, will be displayed this year.

A reception will be held on Friday, February 4, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and it is open to members and guests in the library's community room. The Madison Art Society will be making a donation to the library at the reception to honor and extend their gratitude to the library for housing the art society's art shows over the years. On Sunday, February 6 at 1:30 p.m., Frank Federicio, a master pastelist, will conduct a critique of the art work. The Madison Art Society has more than 200 members. It conducts lectures, painting demonstrations and member painting sessions on a year-round basis. Patricia Seakamp and Ellen Fabian are the new coordinators for the Madison Town Hall. Audrey Fitting and and John Copelin will be exhibiting their art work in January and February.

We have two co-chairs for our Juried Show, Linda Loen and Nancy Schwartz. They will be seeking members for the various teams needed to put on a show of this magnitude. Receiving for the Juried Show is April 30 from 9:30 a.m. until noon with a Reception on Friday, May 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. We will have a lecture demo on Sunday, May 15 at 1:30 p.m. by water colorist and oil painter, Jerry Caron.

In addition, Winter Studio is completely filled and it will start on Monday, January 10, 2011. Beth Wardwell has 3 additional demonstrations scheduled for the summer, plein air painting will start again in the summer, and outdoor art events will be offered to our artists. I hope you re-join for 2011 and that I will see all of you at these events.

will be accepted. Sculpture must be steady and accompanied by a safe, free-standing pedestal. Two-dimensional entries

cannot exceed 36 inches in length or width, including the frame. Work cannot have been shown in any previous Scranton

Library show.

The Madison Art Society reserves the right to remove or decline any submitted work for any reason at any time including

President’s Letter

We have a lot to give thanks for this year—a wonderful year of expanded demonstrations and lectures, plein air sessions extended until November, well-attended member and juried shows, and an increase in the number of outdoor show events to expand our artists’ ability to display and sell their paintings. I hope you join us again in 2011 and send in next year’s dues by January. There are many reasons to be part of a local art organization, such as socializing and networking with other artists, learning from each other and sharing, as well as showing your work by participating in our art shows.

We are already in the process of planning our events for next year. I hope to see all of you at our member show in February and juried show in May. The winter studio will start in January, and our first demonstration/lecture is Wednesday, February 16, at 6:30 pm, by Fred Biamonte, educator and lecturer from the New Britain Museum of Art. He will give a slide presentation on the art of John Singer Sargent.

Elected Artists’ Small Artworks Holiday Show at People’s Bank. People’s Bank is exhibiting our Elected Artists’ Small Artworks Holiday Show again this November and December. The show looks great, and it is such a great idea for the holidays to purchase an original piece of art as a gift to keep or share. To become an elected artist, you must be an active member prior to the juried show and be accepted into two juried shows within a five-year period. Thanks to Sara Nebel for coordinating the event. Dues. The MAS board decided that, with everything else going up in price, we would not raise our dues. They will remain steady at $25. Our financial year is January through December. MAS Juried Show is in May and the co-chairs are Linda Loen and Nancy Schwartz. Thank you both for coordinating this big event! We will be looking for volunteers to co-chair receiving, jurying, hanging, reception, and sitting the show. The dates for the show are: receiving on Saturday, April 30, 9:30 am–noon; judging on Saturday, April 30, 1 pm; hanging on Sunday, May 1, 1 pm; reception on Friday, May 6, 5–7 pm; and pick up on Saturday, May 28. Again, when you send in your dues, please let us know in what capacity you can volunteer this year.

Plein air painting. We have stopped painting outdoors for the season (not bad to run into mid-November!). A special thanks to Jay Babina for coordinating it for us this year. Great job!

Winter Studio. The winter studio will be held at St. Andrew’s Church in Madison for ten weeks on Mondays starting January 3, 9–3 pm. These sessions include weekly critiques by the artists. Two still-life setups will be available each week to paint, or artists can work on their own artwork. We have reached our class limit of 20 members. Course details will be sent to the participants. If you want to be a substitute on Mondays, contact Bschirmeier@yahoo.com.

The Shoreline Arts Trail was held November 19–21. Several MAS artists had their art and studios on display, including Terry Bogan, Mary Nicholas, Stuart Lerner, Eileen Eder, and Maggie Dean.

Barbara Elliot was the Artist of the Month, November, at the Old Saybrook Estuary’s Marsh View Gallery. She was accepted in the juried Guilford Art Show and the Clinton Art shows this year.

Linda Loen had her paintings hanging at the Guilford Town Hall November though December.

Denise Casey and Maryanne Rupp are the artists for November and December at Simply Pearls in Westbrook at Water’s Edge Resort. John Tubb also has paintings on display there.

Several MAS artists are among the 60 Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society members who are exhibiting at the Hartford Frame Shop from November through January 29. They will be having demonstrations on Saturdays, 11 - 1 pm. Check info@hartfordfineart.com for information.

A new art cooperative gallery, called Maple and Main in Chester, is located in downtown Chester. Eight of our members joined the co-op of over 30 artists (Jan Blencowe, Nan Iselin, Diane Aeschliman, Sara Drought Nebel, Jennifer Holmes, Joan Cole, Rosemary Berlutti, and Barbara Rossitto). They will have an art gallery to showcase their art, they will conduct demos, and they plan on teaching art classes in the future. Diane Aeschliman offered a portrait demo on Thursday, November 18. Barbara Rossitto was accepted into the Connecticut Watercolor Society Show.

The Odyssey group, Karen Lipeika, Phyllis Bevington, Paula Solimene Emery and Pat Barone, are showing their work at Robert’s Physical Therapy Center in Old Saybrook through January.

Jennifer Holmes had a solo show at the Rockport Art Association in November. In addition, her painting was accepted in the national juried exhibition at the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club at the National Arts Club in New York City.

Lisabeth Billingsley’s art appeared on the virtual online Body Image Show at penandbrush.org.

The New Britain Museum of American Art Member Show has accepted several of our members’ work, including Betsey Haigis, Joan McPherson, Diana Rogers, Jan Blencowe, and Diane Aeschliman. Congratulations!

Corina Alvarezdelugo had her art on display at the Water Show in Old Saybrook along with Diana Rogers. Corina also showed her art at Winter Lights in New London at the Expressions Cultural Center.

Stuart Lerner Sculpture Gallery showcased his sculptures in his gallery at 22 Scotland Ave., Madison, this summer and fall.

Beverly Schirmeier’s work was on display at the Emerald Isle Gallery, Clinton, from October until November 20. Her art will also be on display from December thru February at Malone’s in Clinton and at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven in December.

Lorene Sholl was the artist for November at the Liberty Bank in Clinton and Cheri Weymann will exhibit her work there in December and January.

Many MAS members were in the landscape show at the Lyme Art Association and the Guilford Art League member show at the Scranton Library in November.

John Tubb and Suzanne Burnham had their paintings on display in November at Malone's Coffee House, Clinton.

Madison Town Hall Artists for the Months of November and December

The Madison Art Society presents the artwork of oil painters Lois Lehr and
Phyllis Bevington. Their art work will be on display throughout
November and December at the Madison Town Hall at 8 Campus Road in Madison,
Connecticut. The show is open to
the public for viewing during normal business hours.

Lois Shine Lehr, a resident of Branford, is a former nursing educator with a life-long interest in art and painting. After her retirement from nursing, she studied with Lynn Nelsen Aylsworth. In recent years, she has been a student of Lou Bonamarte. Her medium is oil and she particularly enjoys painting local
scenes along the shoreline. Lois is a member of the Madison Art Society and the Lyme Art Association.

Phyllis Bevington, a resident of Chester, has studied at the Lyme Art
Academy and Guilford Art Center. She has continued her studies by participating in
art workshops in the US and Europe. Artists whom she has worked with are Dean
Keller, Noel Belton, Leah Lopez, and Lou Bonamarte. At present, she is an
associate artist member of Lyme Art Association, Essex Art Association, and
Madison Art Society. Also, she is active with the Odyssey Plein Air painters. For many
years, she worked in watercolor, but in recent years Phyllis’s art work has been mostly in
oil.

Happy Autumn MAS Artists

MAS still has a few more events planned for this year before 2011.

Bauer Farm Family Festival- I hope you come out this Saturday, October 16 from 11 - 3 for the Bauer Farm Family Festival off of Hunter Trail in Madison. Our plein air painters will be displaying their painting of Bauer Park and painting on site. There will be lots of fun things for the family to do too. No rain date.

Elected Artists Holiday Small Artworks at the Peoples Bank . Six MAS and CAS artists are currently participating in group art show at the Westbrook Senior Center at the Westbrook Town Hall for the month of October. They are Karen Wiesner, Joanne McCarty, Elizabeth Shea, Maryanne Rupp, Pat Gedney , and Beverly Schirmeier. They will donate 15% of sales to the senior center.

Remember that Frank Federicio's demo is this Thursday at 6:30 p.m.. It is at the Indian Reserve Complex in Clinton not the Madison Memorial Town Hall.

The Board has started planning for the MAS events for next year. We still need a coordinator for the Member Show in February and the Juried Show in May. There are always enough members willing to help on the sub committes, but we need a chairperson to coordinate the events. let me know if you are willing to chair the shows.
We have over 225 members. Unforuantely, we not heard from many of you about whether you will be attending the MAS Annual Meeting? It is scheduled for Monday 27th of this month from 5 -7 p.m.. at the Madison Country Club Golf Course (great balconies overlooking the club) . What a wonderful way to meet and enjoy your fellow artists and their spouses or significant others. The meeting portion of it takes less than 5 -10 minutes. We need you to RSVP as soon as possible for planning purposes. No charges - just bring an appetizer or dessert to share.

Frank Federicio is a seasoned artist with many credits garnishing his career. Frank’s method is unique and an exciting way to achieve bold and painterly pastels rendering while stressing the more dynamic characteristics of composition and design. He attained the honorable level of signature membership of numerous prestigious art societies including Pastel Society of America, National Watercolor Society, Pastel Society of Painters on Cape Cod and Degas Pastel Society, to name a few. Madison Art Society Town Hall Artists for the Months of September and October are Rosemary Serfillippi and Roseanne Berlutti.

MAS Board of Directors (nineteen members) are currently displaying their paintings and sculpture throughout the month of September at the Scranton Memorial Library in Madison throughout the month of September . The library is located at 801 Boston Post Road.

Corina Alvarezdelugo is participating inthe Milford Open Doors of Downtown - painting various doors. She will also take part in the 13th City Wide Open Studios in New Haven (September 16th - October 10, 2010). The Somewhat Off the Wall Exhibiton and Fundraiser is this weekend in New Haven on Sunday, September 12, 2010. In addition, her art work will shown at Latin Views 2010 Biennial at the Alexy Von Schilippe Gallery, UCONN Avery Point..

Six MAS and CAS artists are currently participating in group art show at the Westbrook Senior Center at the Westbrook Town Hall for the months of September and October. They are Karen Wiesner, Joanne MCarty, Elizabeth Shea, Maryanne Rupp, Pat Gedney , and Beverly Schirmeier. They will donate 15% of sales to the senior center.

Lorene Sholl will be the artist for the months of October and November at the Liberty bank in Clinton.

Beverly Schirmeier will have her art work on display at the Emerald Isle Gallery, Clinton in October (October 14 to Novmber 20) with an Opening Art Reception scheduled for Sunday, October 17 from 2 - 4:30 p.m. Her art will also be on display for the month of October at the Acton Library in Old Saybrook

Linda Loen is the artist of the month of September at the Guilford Free Library on the Green . Jay Babina will be the artist for October.

Many MAS members are in the Annual Guilford Art League Juried Show this month.

John Tubbs and Suzanne Burnham have their paintings on display in July at Malone's Coffee House, Clinton this Fall.

The Conencticut Pastel Juried Renaissance Show in Waterbury at the Mattatuck Art Museum this October will feature the pastels of Laurel Friedman, Emily Bett, Diana Rogers and Maryanne Rupp. Congratulations to them.

A new Art Co-op Gallery, Maple and Main in Chester had a soft opening on September 17 in downtown Chester. Eight of our members have joined the art co-op of over 30 artists ( Jan Blencowe, Nan Iselin, Diane Aesheliman, Sara Drought Nebel, Jennifer Holmes, Joan Cole, Rosemary Berlutti, and Barbara Rossi). They will will have an art gallery to showcase their art, conducting demos, and they plan on teaching art classes in the future.

Jan Blencowe and Nan Iselin are two of the featured artists on display in Niantic at the Gallery on Main. Nan is also the featured Liberty Bank watercolor artist in Clinton for the month of September.

George Johnson is the artist of th Month at the Senior Estuary Gallery in Old Saybrook this month.

Lisabeth Billingsley's contemporary artwork is at the Connecticut River Artisans in Chester this month.

MAS Artists

Have we heard from you yet about whether you will be attending the MAS Annual Meeting? It is going to be held at the Madison Country Club Golf Course with great balconies overlooking the club. It is a wonderful way to meet and enjoy your fellow artists and their spouses or significant others. The meeting portion of it takes less than 5 -10 minutes. It is scheduled for Monday 27th of this month from 5 -7 p.m..  We need you to RSVP as soon as possible for planning purposes. No charges - just bring an appetizer or dessert to share.

Peoples Bank has invited us to exhibit our Elected Artists Small Artworks Holiday Show ( 5X7 or 6X8 inch painting in any size frame) again this November and December. Over half of our membership are elected artists. To become an Elected Artist, you must be an active member prior to the show and be accepted into two juried shows within a five year period of time. If you are not sure whether you are an elected member, I have attached a list.

Frank Federicio is a seasoned artist with many credits garnishing his career. Frank’s method is unique and an exciting way to achieve bold and painterly pastels rendering while stressing the more dynamic characteristics of composition and design. He attained the honorable level of signature membership of numerous prestigious art societies including Pastel Society of America, National Watercolor Society, Pastel Society of Painters on Cape Cod and Degas Pastel Society, to name a few. He has received numerous awards including the Grumbacher Gold, Silver and Bronze, many honors from the Pastel Society of America, National Society of Painters in Casein & Acrylic, Allied Artists of America and many more awards.

Nineteen Board of Director members from the Madison Art Society will be displaying their paintings and sculpture throughout the month of September at the Scranton Memorial Library in Madison throughout the month of September . The library is located at 801 Boston Post Road.

Viewing the artwork of these award winning artists will be open to the public free of charge during normal library hours and artwork can be purchased directly from the artists. The artists will be donating a portion of the sales to the library. An open house reception will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2010 from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is invited.

A wonderful selection of local landscape scenes and still lifes worked in watercolor, pastel, sculpture, acrylic and oil painting will be showcased for the public to view throughout September. The artists that will be participating are Jay Babina, Patricia Barone, Denise Casey, Nancy Chapman, Penny Chittenden, John Copelin, Ellen Fabian, Dick Kennedy, Suart Lerner , Joan Mc Pherson, , Seymour Page, Maryanne Rupp, Beverly Schirmeier, Maude Schmidt, Patrica Seakamp, Paula Solimene- Emery, Don Townsell, John Tubb , and Beth Wardwell.

MAS August News

It was a beautiful Saturday to hold our outdoor art exhibition on the Madison Town Green for the Madison Exchange Club. Our artists sold 12 more paintings on Salong with the 24 that were sold at the Scranton Library Outdoor Art Exhibition - not bad . We enjoyed quality time with each other even if we did not sell. Of course, it would have been nice to sell some too.

Unfortunately, several artists have recently dropped out the Hammonassett Show this coming weekend August 21. Since the Friends of Hammonasset have already rented a tent for us and they invited the artists that were participating to come their Friends of Hammonasset cookout, I would love to see some artists volunteer to show their work. Any takers (Hammonasset scenes or nature) contact me at bschirmeier@yahoo.com.

We are going to co-sponsor one more demonstration this year along with the Clinton Art Society by pastelist, Frank Federiccio on September 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Clinton Park and Recreation Indian River Complex.

Our Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, September 27, 2010 at the Madison Country Club Golf Course from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. (no charge). A special thanks to Don Trownsell for coordinating the event for us. I hope that you will be able to join us and share in this enjoyable annual affair – a great location, good food, wine and friends. However for planning purposes, it is essential that you let us know as soon as possible whether you will be attending, bringing a spouse/significant other, and bring either an appetizer or dessert to share.

The purpose of the Annual Meeting, although primarily festive, is a set time by our bylaws to elect our slate of Board of Directors for the next year and approve any changes to our by-laws. The MAS board would like to recognize Dick Kennedy as he steps down from the board for all of his support he has given to the organization over the years. We will be voting on the next year’s board nominations with the addition of Linda Loen as a new potential board member. Officers are elected by the board in October and they serve a two year term (Beverly Schirmeier, President, Don Trownsell- Vice President, Joan Mc Pherson – Treasurer and Nancy Chapman and Maryanne Rupp co- Secretaries). Other members returning next year are Jay Babina, Patricia Barone, Denise Casey, Penny Chittenden, John Copelin, Stuart Lerner, Seymour Page, Maude Schmidt, Patricia Seakamp, Paula Solimene Emery, John Tubb, and Beth Wardwell. Their dedication to MAS organization is essential and makes my job as president possible to support our growing number of members.

We cannot do all the exhibitions and activities that we offer without your help too. We are looking for co-chairs for the Members Show in February and for the Juried Show in May. We start in the fall to line up critiques, jurors, space, pr, and reviewing activities. Although the BOD meets monthly, MAS does not meet as an organization from October through January. Please let any BOD member or me know if you will be willing to serve in some capacity.

As they say, “Love Your Local - Artists” so come out and support our artists at our outdoor exhibitions. We have been busy painting outdoors on Wednesdays at lovely locations. Thanks again to Jay Babina for coordinating our Plein air outings this year.

Outdoor Exhibition Dates

We will have offered five outdoor art exhibitions this year for our members to showcase their artwork. Over ten percent of our members have participated so far.

At the Scranton Library sale, we sold 24 paintings that weekend. A special thanks to Seymour Page and John Copelin for coordinating that event. The Arts and Antique Fair on the Madison Green was a beautiful summer day along the ability to share quality time with our artists plus the extra bonus that several of our members sold over 12 paintings. In addition, MAS is helping other non-profits by donating a percentage of their art sales to support their community efforts such as the Hammonasset Nature Center on August 21.

Barbara Rossitto’s Reclining Nude, pastel, won a prize at the last Essex Art Association Show and several of our members’ artwork were also chosen for the show.

Sandy Kensler and her husband, Terry, will be having a fund raising art exhibit including his photographs of Africa for August at the Scranton Library. Sales will go to support the widows and orphans of Kenya.
